This week I’m loving doughnuts.  Mostly in anticipation of my trip to Manchester this weekend, and what do they have in Manchester?  Krispy Kreme doughnuts.  Y.U.M.  They are my absolute favourite doughnuts and I can’t wait to get my paws on a box of three.  Two simple glazed and one raspberry filled.  I have a simple doughnut palette but simple is best in this case.

That fine looking doughnut above was made my me, using this recipe.  I tackled the challenge of frying them, and it wasn’t as scary or stressful as I expected!  They are cake doughnuts, rather than the yeasted variety, that’s the next challenge!

Churros in doughnut form? Gimme!

These pretty raspberry doughnuts would be lovely for a summer picnic. (p.s. I love the look of these mini cherry pies too

Loving everything about these ombre doughnuts.  The boxes and labels are super cute.

Nutella doughnuts.  Enough said!

Baked Lemon & Blueberry Doughnuts

When is it doughnuts and not donuts?  Is it the American was to call them Donuts, a la Dunkin Donuts?  To be fair, these doughnuts/donuts don’t actually use any dough so I doubt it really matters too much.  According to Krispy Kreme, my gold standard when it comes to the deep fried variety call them doughnuts, so that about settles it in my mind.

I Google’d it, because when in doubt….Google, and stumbled a wonderful article about aman who baked 799 cookies in 24 hours to give to friends, in exchange for the friends donating to charity.  The story of his baking marathon is interwoven with notes from the story of his grandfathers bakery, started just before World War 2.  I suggest you check it out, it’s a lovely way to spend ten minutes!

Anyway, in conclusion, we’re spelling it doughnuts and we’re baking these doughnuts.  Blueberry and sour cream doughnuts with a lemon and blueberry glaze.  Delicious and summery, so not season appropriate but they should cheer you up on a dreary February afternoon. (more…)

Mocha Doughnuts with Maple Glaze

Another season, another list.  Over the summer I compiled a summer bucket list which was fairly successful and most things were ticked off.  So, as we are well in to autumn, it’s time for a new to do list!

  1. Spend the day walking in a forest full of autumn colours.
  2. Get to grips with my new DSLR camera.
  3. Finish my quilt (for real this time).
  4. Buy my very own biscuits in the shops!
  5. Enroll in an evening class.
  6. Actually use the ‘Couch to 5k’ app I have on my phone.
  7. Buy the perfect tweed mini skirt.
  8. Make real doughnuts.

The last one on the list came to me after making these baked doughnuts.  Now these doughnuts are delicious, and certainly look the part, but they aren’t really doughnuts.  Making real doughnuts has always scared me a little, all that super hot oil just seems dangerous, which is why I’ve stuck to the baked variety.

This will be my farewell to baked doughnuts recipe.  The next time you see doughnuts around these parts they will be fully fledged and deep fried, maybe even filled, but until then…
